Step 1: Switch on the alarms by turning the lever on the back.

Step 2: Press and hold the test/hush button on one of the alarms until the green light flashes three times, then release. After you release, the red light flashes rapidly for one minute (this indicates now in pairing mode). Keep this ‘master’ alarm to one side as you will use it to end the pairing process.

Step 3: Hold the test/hush button on the next alarm until the green light flashes twice, then release. After you release, the green light will flash slowly three times to indicate successful pairing. Repeat step 3 with all other alarms.

Step 4: To end the pairing process, press the test/hush button again on the first ‘master’ alarm that you set aside in step two.

NOTE: If any alarm fails to pair, hold the test/hush button until the green light flashes 4 times, then release. After you release, the green light will flash 3 times to indicate it has been cleared successfully. Now you can repeat the pairing process for this alarm.

Law in Queensland says that wireless interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms must be installed on each level:

  1. In every bedroom; and,
  2. In hallways which connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling; or
  3. If there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey; and
  4. If there are no bedrooms on a storey at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.

The legislation also states;

Where practicable smoke alarms must be placed on the ceiling. Smoke alarms must not be placed:

  1. Within 300mm of a corner of a ceiling and a wall,
  2. Within 300mm of a light fitting,
  3. Within 400mm of an air-conditioning vent,
  4. Within 400mm of the blades of a ceiling fan.

There are special requirements for sloping ceilings, stairways, and ceilings with exposed beams. Specific requirements are further explained in the Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008.

If it is not practical for the prescribed location requirements to be met (e.g. may be affected by fumes from cooking or hot steam from a bathroom), the owner may put the alarm at another location that will still provide a warning to occupants of the building.
